Types of Food Storage

There are basically three distinct classes of food storage: Survival Food Storage (short term), Emergency Food Storage (medium term), and a Long Term Food Supply.

Food storage can be broken down into three basic categories based on the length of time it can supply food for. A survival food storage is a short term supply that will last from a minimum of three days (72 hours) up to one month. An Emergency Food Supply is a medium term supply capable of providing for one adult a 1-month to 2-month supply. Lastly, there is a Long Term Food Storage which is able to provide food for a person for a year or longer.

We live in a rapidly changing world full of cataclysmic natural, as well as, manmade events. Historical events that can temporarily, or forever change the world around us. Look at how much has changed in the way people live, survive, and interact with the world around them in just the course of a few generations.

Lewis and Clark did on find an overland passage to the west coast of the United States until 1806. It was barely a generation ago that our grandparents lived a subsistence lifestyle in which they provided for themselves. Today much, and in some cases, all of that knowledge has been lost and replaced by entirely different skills. Most of us are completely dependent on complex manufacturing and distribution system that is highly dependent other highly complex systems.

Man-man systems such as continued supply of cheap fossil fuel energy, as well as, natural systems such as weather patterns. All of these systems are sustainable to both man-made, as well as natural disasters. Man-made in the form of war or strife, energy supply shortages, or simply power disruptions. Natural in the form of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, flooding, and volcanic eruptions, and meteor strikes to name a few!

... and yet, in light of all this, most of us are far less prepared for a minor or major disaster than our grand parents and there parents, who had far better subsistence skills that we do today.

Survival Food Storage (short term) - This the starting point for a basic food supply in the case of very basic need. This is a minimum storage that is recommended for you and your family to prepare in advance and updated every two to three years as food it contains expires. We have some recommendations for the types of foods, and how they are packaged, that you should be thinking about for this.

Emergency Food Storage (medium term) - This is a storage that you build to once you have your survival food store established. This is a store that will provide a couple months or more of food. The trick to putting this storage together is to know what to store, and how to store it. We have multiple articles and information that can help provide you with all the necessary information to do this.

Long Term Food Storage (1-year or longer) - This is for those who are serious about being able to provide for themselves and their family in times of great need. This system is meant to be able to provide food for you and your family for one year or longer. Putting together a supply like this may seem impossible, but it is actually really easy and will probably cost you about as much as you spend on home and auto insurance over the course of a year!
