Food Preservation Methods

There are various ways to preserve food. The method that is best will depend on the type food as well as how long the food needs to be preserved for. Lets learn about the strengths and differences of the different methods.

There are a variety of ways to preserve food for future consumption. Which type of container you use will depend on what you want to store and how long you will want it to last. So to help you decide which might work best for you, we'll give you a general description of each one as well as giving you a few pros and cons to consider about them. We'll be discussing :

Canned - There are a few different types of canning to keep in mind. First you have dry canning of items like wheat, rice, and beans (dry of course). Then there is wet canning for things that are wet (chilis, sauces, etc...). You can further break wet canning into High-Acid Canning and Low-Acid Canning. Learn more about these processes here!

Freeze Dried - Is almost exclusively done at the commercial level. It is useful to know how freeze dried food is created and the strengths of weaknesses of adding this type of food to your personal food storage. It is a super light weight and nutrient dense type of food storage. Because of freeze dried food it is possible to store things like eggs (once freeze dried) in excess of 5 years. The huge assortment and the amazing convenience of just add water meals is a huge plus as well.

Frozen - Everyone knows that freezing most foods will allow them to last much longer. But how can you store foods in a way to help them last in the freezer much longer? Here we provide information about how to make the most of freezing foods including how to prevent freezer burn and other common problems and mistakes.

Dehydrated - Dehydrating of foods is probably the oldest method for preserving food that we know of. There are many ways to do it, but with the invention of cheap do it at home food dryers, there is only one we recommend! It's interesting to know how it was done in the past; it helps us appreciate how easy it is for us today. Once you have dehydrated fruits, vegetables, or meats a few times, you will find yourself asking... why don't I do this more often?
