Why Start a Food Storage?

What are the reasons for getting started with a food storage plan?

Getting started with a food storage program of your own can sometimes feel overwhelming. There are so many different ways to store food that it can be confusing trying to figure out where to start and what type of food to start with. So what we'll do here is just begin to cover basics of what you need to know before you start on your home food storage system.

First you need to decide why it is you're storing food? Because what you want to store, how much you will need to buy of it and how you will store it will depend on your answer. So asking yourself this question and figuring out the answer is an important step to creating your very own food storage program. So what are some reasons behind why we need to store food? The answer to that is as simple or as complicated as we want to make it.

On the one hand, we truly are becoming more and more of a global society. The droughts in one country have an impact on the availability of grain in another. Political unrest also plays a part in whether food being transported or shipped overseas actually makes it to its destination. Acts of global terrorism or piracy could potentially shut down air traffic and shipping routes indefinitely. So many factors take place "behind the scenes" that it doesn't take much to disturb supply routes between countries, effectively making it harder and harder for people to buy the food they need to survive.

On the other hand, our reason behind storing food could be as simple as running out of time and needing to cook dinner from foods we have stored in our cupboards. Or maybe we live in an area that is affected by storms and we can't always count on being able to get to a store whenever we want to. Whatever our reasons, accurately deciding why we want to store food plays a large part in getting started and determines what to buy and how we'll store it.
